ABOUT US
Who We Are
The Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Care Practitioners (ACTSCP) is a professional body dedicated to supporting and advancing the role of Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) in the field of cardio-thoracic surgery. SCPs are non-medical practitioners who work as integral members of the extended surgical team under the supervision of Consultant Surgeons. They must be registered healthcare professionals with either the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health Professions Council.
Our Role
SCPs perform a wide range of duties including examining patients, clerking, requesting investigations, assisting and performing delegated duties in theatres, managing postoperative care, adjusting treatment plans, and handling discharge and follow-up care. They play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of surgical teams, ensuring high-quality patient care.
Education and Training
Since the advent of the National Curriculum Framework, SCP trainees can pursue a full-time postgraduate program that includes extensive clinical training. Each student is supervised by a named Consultant Surgeon and mentored by a senior SCP or Specialist Registrar. Their skills are assessed through various work-based assessments, such as practice-based assessments, case-based discussions, and direct observation of procedural skills. This rigorous training process ensures that SCPs are well-equipped to meet the demands of their role.
Our Impact
SCPs are vital to many units across the UK, helping to address staffing challenges brought about by the European Working Time Directive and changes in doctor training structures. By providing consistent and skilled support, SCPs help to implement service improvements and positively influence the quality of care. Their role is essential in meeting service needs and maintaining high standards in surgical care.
Our Vision
ACTSCP is committed to fostering a community of skilled professionals dedicated to excellence in cardio-thoracic surgical care. We advocate for the recognition and advancement of SCPs, providing support, education, and resources to ensure their success and growth in the medical field.
Join ACTSCP and be part of a community that is dedicated to enhancing the role of Surgical Care Practitioners, improving patient outcomes, and advancing the field of cardio-thoracic surgery.
